What is Badgerdog?

Many of the Library Foundation’s programs are devoted to literacy, reading, and increasing the entire community’s access to information and knowledge. The Library Foundation is very pleased to enrich its commitment to literacy through its Badgerdog writing program.

Each summer, Badgerdog hosts three-week writing workshops for rising 3rd- through 12th-graders. These intensive writing workshops allow students to work closely with a professional writer as they explore the arts of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and playwriting. All campers experience the joy of performing and publishing their original work.

Each Spring Break, Badgerdog offers workshops led by professional writers who introduce students to literary works and techniques and inspire young writers to author their own fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Workshops are limited to 15 students, and all participating writers are invited to publish their work on our student blog, Unbound.

Badgerdog offers creative writing workshops for adult writers of all age and skill levels in libraries and community centers across Austin. Some classes offer a broad survey of literary genres and written forms, while others focus specifically on fiction, poetry, or nonfiction.

Each year, Badgerdog sends professional writers into classrooms across Central Texas, where they inspire students to embrace the challenge and beauty of writing. Our teaching artists follow Badgerdog’s READ-WRITE-SHARE teaching model. Lessons engage students through creative and critical thinking, and invite young writers to explore how language is used to create meaning and affect readers. All lessons are TEKS-aligned and tailored to support grade-level curriculum.

These writing programs follow the workshop model: Writers of all ages and skill levels are invited to examine the techniques of literary artists and experiment with language to communicate experience and meaning. Our goal is to empower Austinites to develop the skills necessary to communicate effectively and beautifully, to amplify individual voices, and to share in a love of reading and writing.

All workshops are led by professional writers, who follow a simple teaching model: READ, WRITE, SHARE. We READ the works of published writers to discover the techniques, strategies, and tools that make writing vivid and compelling. We WRITE, practicing the arts of storytelling and poetry. We SHARE—reading our own work aloud in the classroom, performing in public, or having work published; sharing brings writers in contact with readers, helping build literary communities in our own backyards.

Badgerdog workshops take place in libraries, school classrooms, and community centers, sometimes even in private homes. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to work with and learn from a writer.
