On August 27, Austin City Council approved a measure establishing the city as a Book Safe Harbor — a step toward protecting access to books and defending the freedom to read and safeguarding equitable access to library materials.
The decision comes as debates over book challenges and access to library materials continue across Texas and the country.
We’re especially proud to have helped get this idea moving. The Library Foundation introduced the concept to the Austin Library Commission, which then recommended it to City Council.
It’s a great example of what can happen when our community comes together to support libraries, readers and the freedom to explore ideas.
