Every summer, Austin Central Library transforms into one of the city’s biggest celebrations of learning, imagination, and play during the annual Kids Block Party. And thanks to generous donors and community sponsors, this beloved event remains completely free for families.
This year, nearly 3,750 children and caregivers joined the fun, making it the largest Kids Block Party yet. The Library Foundation helped make the day possible by securing more than $11,000 in sponsorship support from Ally Medical, LCRA, Whataburger, Raising Cane’s, and H-E-B, covering a significant portion of the event’s costs.
One of the day’s biggest highlights rolled in on four wheels. Through a partnership with CapMetro, a special Austin Public Library Centennial bus wrapped in celebration of the Library’s 100th anniversary became a one-of-a-kind storytime venue. Local author Lindsay Leslie delighted young readers with three readings of Gus Hearts the Bus, while The Library Foundation gave away 100 copies of the book so families could continue the adventure at home.
From dinosaur fossils and paleontology demonstrations to STEM activities, robotics, nature exploration, and interactive storytimes, Kids Block Party showcased the many ways libraries inspire curiosity beyond the pages of a book.
