Austin Public Library is pleased to announce Hannah Terrell as its new Director of Libraries.
The Director leads the Austin Public Library system, overseeing its operations, programs, facilities and staff. The position became vacant when former Director Roosevelt Weeks accepted a position as the director of Fort Bend County Libraries. Terrell has been serving as Interim Director since then.
The city commenced a nationwide search and interview process, which resulted in Terrell’s selection. She now holds the position of Director of Libraries on a permanent basis, effective today, December 15, 2025.
“It has been an honor to lead the Austin Public Library as Interim Director, and I am deeply grateful to now be stepping into the permanent role of Director,” stated Terrell. “I look forward to continuing this work alongside the brilliant staff at APL as we move confidently together into APL’s second century of service.”
Austin Public Library will celebrate its centennial in 2026.
About Hannah Terrell:
Terrell is a public library executive with more than two decades of experience leading library services in both large urban systems and rural communities. Since September 2024, Terrell has served as Interim Director of Libraries for the Austin Public Library Department, overseeing a team of more than 460 employees and advancing the library’s strategic vision and mission for the rapid growth and diverse needs of Austin.
Terrell’s leadership is grounded in equity, collaboration, and staff development; she is known for empowering teams and championing inclusive programming.
Her library career also includes key leadership roles with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Union County Public Library in Charlotte, NC where she launched civic engagement initiatives and innovative service pilots that expanded access for underserved communities. She holds a Master of Library Science degree from North Carolina Central University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy.
